Assembling a collection of images of Hungary's churches proved to be the simplest manner in which to explore our homeland. After all, what other type of building can be found in every community, from the smallest town to the largest city? And what other building's forms are both strictly defined and yet never the same? What other building overwhelms the viewer with its awesome towers or its elegant simplicity? It is not only religious denomination that determines the characteristics of a church, its forms also depend on the time and place in which it was built. Neither should it be forgotten that a church also bear the marks of those whose lives are devoted to their upkeep and use. Over our travels, we walked through many towns and many villages, and we photographed many churches. We agreed each time, however, that the church formed an integral part of the given urban fabric. We hope that our website will prove useful to those who are gathering information for purposes of professional or academic research; and to those who are generally intrigued by architecture, that it presents an enriching opportunity to further explore their interests. No less significantly, we hope that our website will inspire our viewers to take initiative to explore their neighboring areas, towns, villages and especially churches... of which we welcome new contributions to our photographic collection.
